Damamli and Therapeutic Foster Care

Damamli is a foster care and independent living preparation program for pregnant and parenting adolescent mothers ages 16-20 who are in the Foster Care System or Department of Juvenile Services System. Damamli is licensed to provide services to a maximum of 24 clients and can accept youth who are pregnant or have no more than two children.

The Specialized Foster Care program was implemented in 1990 by our former HHY employee and ongoing supporter, Robin Semas. In 1993, the program was renamed Family Ties Treatment Foster Care (TFC) and that same year, the Independent Living Program (ILP) opened in Baltimore; together the programs make up Damamli. Damamli was initiated in response to the need, specifically in Baltimore, for a program that could help young women in foster care who were pregnant or parenting. At the time the Damamli program was started, there had been a spike in that population and a lack of programs to meet their needs.

The Damamli program puts the young mothers in foster care or independent living, rather than a group home, because the State identified that young mothers have needs that are unique from those of youth in group homes and that they require specific services that would be best provided in a foster home or independent living environment.

The Damamli program provides young mothers with intensive case management. In our care, our young mothers have a supportive home where they receive life skills training, learn how to manage their time, and learn how to effectively parent. We also work with them on their educational and professional goals with a focus on helping them secure career-oriented positions to ensure stability for themselves and their children. We work with the young women as quickly as possible to secure a job or an education program to ensure the young mothers qualify for daycare assistance from the State.

TFC provides the mothers with the opportunity to raise their children in a safe and nurturing foster home. While in the foster home, clients work with their foster parent and case manager to begin developing a plan for their future and working on the steps needed to accomplish their goals. Foster parents in our Damamli program work closely with clients to help them build their parenting and independent living skills. Once they are prepared, Damamli assists clients in transitioning to a supported independent living apartment.

What makes the Damamli ILP unique is that we individualize the program to meet the needs of the client. The common thread among our young mothers is that they are pregnant or parenting. However, each client is different and each client’s needs are different so we tailor the services they receive from the program according to their individual needs. Young mothers who may not have been traditionally accepted into another independent living program are given a chance at Damamli. We meet clients where they are and work hand in hand to help them achieve their goals.

For all of the youth who come through our doors, addressing and learning how to manage their own mental health is critically important. When young mothers are referred to us, we identify their individual mental health needs and connect the young mothers to mental health resources in the community. We also have a Clinician who comes to the office once a week to provide therapy to our young mothers.

Volunteering with the youth

On a regular basis, Hearts & Homes puts on activities for our youth. Some of the signature activities include the Back to School Picnic, Kings of Style, and the Princess Party! The purpose of the events is to give the youth a day to feel special, get pampered, develop their confidence, and to get things they need to be prepared for school and work!

In addition to these, we host a variety of activities to get our youth engaged with each other and the community, inspire them, teach them something new, foster their development, and provide them with unique experiences! Workshops for our youth are focused on topics such as Body Image and Self Esteem. Occasionally, Hearts & Homes youth are treated to mentoring from special guests such as Derek Anderson, who share their wisdom. From time to time, volunteers come to Hearts & Homes to spend time with our youth on a project! For example, the Junior Women’s Club of Chevy Chase has come to one of our group homes for girls to bake with them and to take them trick-or treating! Other volunteers come to teach the youth about exercise and healthy living, such as John Bonacci who led our boys at Harriet Tubman in a workout, and Yoga instructor Courtney Boyce who provided a number of yoga sessions to our Helen Smith girls.

Hearts & Homes youth also love giving back to the community! On a regular basis, the youth are volunteering at soup kitchens, convalescent homes, community parks, bake sales, and helping neighbors!

Our mission is to treat each child as if they were our own so we are always looking for new opportunities for our youth! If you would like to volunteer for one of our regular activities, get involved by hosting an activity, or know of a volunteer opportunity in Maryland, please contact Vicki Valle at vicki@heartsandhomes.org

Sponsoring or volunteering at events

The Men’s Event is a fundraiser event hosted by our board member Vic Seested at his restaurant Taste Gastro Pub located in Olney. The event includes beer or wine tasting, a 5-course meal, and meeting celebrities such as Clinton Portis, Michael Andrews, and Giancarlo Esposito!

Another event on our calendar is Girls on the Green, a golf event we hold “just fore women” to raise money for the programs that serve the girls and young women in our care. This year, the tournament will be held at Timbers at Troy Golf Course in Elkridge, on Friday, June 19, 2015. Registration will begin at 8 am and golfers will tee off at 9 am. The tournament will be followed by lunch and awards!

Every year, HHY hosts the HONORS Gala Event, where we honor special individuals who have devoted their lives to the futures of children. Past Honorees include: Wayne K. Curry in memoriam, Tammy Darvish, Toby Orenstein, Steve Staton, Jack Fitzgerald, Patrice and Scott Brickman, Leon Harris, Senator Gwendolyn Britt, Doris Buffett, Robbie Callaway, Juli Jordan, Cal Ripken, Sr., Senator Barbara Mikulski, Brig Owens, Mark Shriver, John Walsh, Coach Gary Williams, and Abe Pollin. Baking with the Junior Women’s Club of Chevy Chase

JWCCCHS1-300x225The Junior Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase (JWCCC) is a non-profit organization located in Chevy Chase, MD that is dedicated to supporting the community and having fun. The JWCCC is a long-time supporter of Hearts & Homes, brining their generosity and enthusiasm to our programs and the kids in our care.

Over the weekend, the JWCCC came to Helen Smith Group Home for Girls and spent a night baking cookies and brownies, and decorating cupcakes with the youth. The next day, the Helen Smith girls helped sell the baked goods at a bake sale!

JWCCCHS6-300x225The girls enjoyed baking and decorating, and loved being out in the community, selling goods they had baked!

In addition to the great experience, the JWCCC treated the girls with Halloween goody bags they had made for the youth. The JWCCC will be coming again in November to make holiday care packages with our HHY girls! Hearts & Homes is grateful to the JWCCC for giving and sharing the gift of giving with our girls.

Time with former NBA star Derek Anderson

da-blue-1-259x300On September 19, 2014, former NBA player Derek Anderson spent a few hours via video conference with the boys of Hearts & Homes. The star athlete who made his mark on basketball, shared his story of being abandoned by his parents at a young age. He talked about his life on the streets and his determination to  beat the odds against him.

An exceptional speaker and role model, Derek Anderson also spoke with the boys about leadership, positive thinking, and the importance of having a positive impact. He challenged the boys to think about what they want to do, who they want to be, and how to make it happen. His warmth and brotherly advice will long be remembered.

Back to School Picnic

10609422_10152655323632112_1320932002858463671_n-300x225Today Hearts & Homes hosted the annual Back to School Picnic, a great way for youth and the Hearts & Homes family to kick off the school year.

Held shortly before school starts, it is a chance for the youth to meet each other and all the staff at Hearts & Homes, get school supplies for the new school year, and enjoy the outdoors.

Hearts & Homes Group Home Program Managers, Counselors, and Social Workers led the fun and welcoming celebration, full of games, sports, activities, and smiles.

Once again, Social & Scientific Systems provided Hearts & Homes with new backpacks filled with school supplies. For years, Social & Scientific Systems have provided the youth of Hearts & Homes with the tools they need to start the school year well prepared.

Body Image and Self Esteem

photo-3-1-300x300Tracey Brown is an accomplished woman. She is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Blinging Beauty, a beauty expert, freelance writer, editor, journalist, spokesperson at Brown Beauty Consulting, and the architect of Sephora.com.

In addition to her professional endeavors, Tracey Brown is a member of Look Good…Feel Better, volunteers with physicians who treat burn survivors, and mentors teenage girls with self-esteem workshops.

On Monday, Tracey Brown treated the girls of Hearts & Homes to a workshop on Body Image and Self Esteem. One of the activities was for the girls to create a brand for themselves that represents their core values! The girls took time cutting a variety of pictures out of magazines and explained how the images represent them and the expectations they believe are held for them.

Tracey Brown treated all of our girls to gift bags full of cosmetics, t-shirts, and other items that reminded the girls they are special and cared about.

photo-3-300x300Hearts & Homes is grateful to Tracey Brown for this workshop and to the volunteers that helped out: Robbeyell McCormick, President of the African American Democratic Party of Montgomery County; Evangeline Stewart, Founder of Let Us Volunteer(LUV); Kari Villa, a U.S. Army medic; Fran Allen from Rep.
