familyOn Wednesday, February 24, Dr. Geetha Gopalan will lead a Category I CEU training authorized by MD BSWE on “Common Child Mental Health Disorders Experienced by Youth in the Child Welfare System.” 2 Category I CEUs will be awarded.

vsnogren@heartsandhomes.org

Geetha Gopalan, LCSW, Ph.D. received both her MSW, in 2006, and her Ph.D. in 2009, from the Columbia University School of Social Work in New York City. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work in Baltimore. Through the doctoral program, Dr. Gopalan focused on mental health service program development, implementation, and dissemination for inner-city, minority youth, and their families. Since her graduation from Columbia in 2009, she has participated in two NIMH-funded intervention research training institutes, the NIH Loan Repayment Program, and a three-year, NIMH-funded National Research Science Award Individual Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
Dr. Gopalan’s interests focus on family-level interventions to improve youth mental health and reduce youth risk behavior, particularly for families with intensive service involvement and extreme psychosocial needs (such as those involved in the child welfare system). She is currently the Principal Investigator of an NIMH-funded study to implement a Multiple Family Groups (MFG) intervention originally provided by advanced mental health practitioners (Masters or PhDs) to reduce child disruptive behavior difficulties, so that it can be delivered by caseworkers providing placement prevention services to child welfare involved families.
Dr. Gopalan’s training today will focus on common child mental health disorders manifested by children and youth involved in the child welfare system. Information will be presented on characteristic symptoms, assessment tools, and an overview of relevant evidence-based treatments for each disorder.

Changing Lives on #GivingTuesday!

Please consider supporting Hearts & Homes for Youth’s Art Therapy program so we can expand our services to all of the youth in our care! Expressing oneself through art is a safe, effective and healthy way to deal with trauma and loss. develop and manage their behavior and feelings, reduce their stress and improve their self esteem.

For the teenage girls in our care at Mary’s Mount Group Home, who have experienced abuse, neglect and other trauma, art can be an extremely therapeutic activity. We have seen firsthand how effective it is to the youth’s overall well-being and for some, art therapy has been the integral component to their healing and recovery.

This is why we are asking for your help to fund #artforhearts, to enable us to expand our art therapy program to all of the youth in our care. Our youth are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to express themselves artistically! Donate $10, $25, $50 or more today to support Hearts & Homes for Youth’s art therapy program this holiday season! $25 would provide for one art therapy session for youth at a group home.

Spreading MODness – Tuesday, November 24th – Sunday, November 29th!

MOD Pizza has chosen Hearts & Homes for Youth for their Spreading MODness campaign this year! From Tuesday, November 24th – Sunday, November 29th, the MOD Squad at the Columbia location (10000 Town Center Avenue, Columbia, MD 21044, 240-865-5607) will donate $1.00 for every MOD Pizza purchased during Thanksgiving Week!

On Black Friday, typically a day of spending, MOD is encouraging customers to give back and “add a buck” to their bill to double the donation and double the impact.

Spread the word – let’s make this a great week of giving!

MOD Pizza exists to inspire.  To inspire through their products, but also inspire through their actions.  In its third year, Spreading MODness 2015 is now an annual campaign.  Last year MOD Pizza raised over $40,000 for at-risk youth and families in the communities MOD serves.  This year they hope to triple that amount by using the power of our MOD Squad and the partner charity, combined with the power of giving, to create a truly inspirational campaign that not only helps those in need in our communities, but feeds the souls of all MODsters and hopefully inspires others!

Hearts & Homes Thanksgiving drive begins with 52 turkeys

Picture12Hearts & Homes for Youth has kicked-off our annual Thanksgiving Drive in Maryland with a generous donation of 40 turkeys from Reid Temple and 12 turkeys from Joe McDevitt of McDevitt and Sons Plumbing and Heating, the first significant step in providing healthy and nutritious holiday meals for all of the youth in our care. Hearts & Homes also received cash donations from two supporters to purchase additional turkeys.

The turkey donation marks the third consecutive year that Reid Temple has donated turkeys to the annual drive. The Reid Temple delivery of 40 frozen turkeys will take place toward the end of the month.

There are numerous ways to contribute to the Thanksgiving Drive:

» Drop-off food: Healthy and nutritious food drop-offs can be made at Hearts & Homes for Youth 9 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.

» Give online: Individuals can also donate funds electronically at https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=e0f522

The deadline for turkey, chicken, and food donations is Nov. 20. Early donations ensure the Hearts & Homes for Youth can distribute the food to our youth and foster families in time for Thanksgiving.
