#GivingTuesday – Help us expand our art therapy program!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHelp us expand our Art Therapy program so we can expand our services to all of the youth in our care! Expressing oneself through art is a safe, effective and healthy way to deal with trauma and loss. develop and manage their behavior and feelings, reduce their stress and improve their self esteem.

For the teenage girls in our care at Mary’s Mount Group Home, who have experienced abuse, neglect and other trauma, art can be an extremely therapeutic activity. We have seen firsthand how effective it is to the youth’s overall well-being and for some, art therapy has been the integral component to their healing and recovery.

This is why we are asking for your help to fund #artforhearts, to enable us to expand our art therapy program to all of the youth in our care. Our youth are eagerly awaiting  the opportunity to express themselves artistically! Donate $10, $25, $50 or more today to support Hearts & Homes for Youth’s art therapy program this holiday season! $25 would provide for one art therapy session for youth at a group home.

More about art therapy

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAArt therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Expressing one’s self artistically can help people to resolve issues, manage their behaviors, understand their emotions, reduce stress, improve self-esteem, and increase awareness of self and others. This in turn can promote personal development, increase coping skills, and enhance cognitive function.

Art therapists are professionals trained in both art and therapy. They work with the youth in our care to reflect on the underlying messages communicated through their art, thereby aiding in the healing process. Art therapists are knowledgeable about human development, psychological theories, clinical practice, spiritual, artistic traditions, and the healing potential of art.

Spreading MODness – Tuesday, November 24th – Sunday, November 29th!

MOD Pizza has chosen Hearts & Homes for Youth for their Spreading MODness campaign this year! From Tuesday, November 24th – Sunday, November 29th, the MOD Squad at the Columbia location (10000 Town Center Avenue, Columbia, MD 21044, 240-865-5607) will donate $1.00 for every MOD Pizza purchased during Thanksgiving Week!

On Black Friday, typically a day of spending, MOD is encouraging customers to give back and “add a buck” to their bill to double the donation and double the impact.

Spread the word – let’s make this a great week of giving!

MOD Pizza exists to inspire.  To inspire through their products, but also inspire through their actions.  In its third year, Spreading MODness 2015 is now an annual campaign.  Last year MOD Pizza raised over $40,000 for at-risk youth and families in the communities MOD serves.  This year they hope to triple that amount by using the power of our MOD Squad and the partner charity, combined with the power of giving, to create a truly inspirational campaign that not only helps those in need in our communities, but feeds the souls of all MODsters and hopefully inspires others!

Coakley Williams Construction and Ruppert Landscape provide free facelift!

IMG_0480On Friday, November 13, Coakley Williams Construction and Ruppert Landscape came to Hearts & Homes for Youth’s Kemp Mill Group Home in Silver Spring and transformed the yard.

Coakley Williams Construction volunteers raked the front and back yards, added mulch and top soil, and planted new flowers and hedge bushes, provided by Ruppert Landscape.

“The transformation of the modest yard is incredible and will have a positive impact on the residents! There are no words to express the gratitude that Hearts & Homes has for everything that Coakley Williams Construction has done for us, and we are grateful to Ruppert Landscape for donating the materials that made this possible” said Hearts & Homes CEO Chloe Perez.

Coakley Williams Construction also recently renovated the kitchen at the Group Home.

#MotivationMonday – Building on progress

IMG_2629To get your week off to a great start, we want to share with you an update about one of the young women in our care at Mary’s Mount Group Home in Harwood (which was recently repainted by volunteers from Fort Meade and UPS in Burtonsville)!

Kimmie is a 16-year-old who came to Hearts & Homes in mid-August with anger management, problems with authority, behavioral issues at school, and dealing with substance abuse. When she entered our program at Mary’s Mount, she quickly adapted to the rules of the house and immediately began receiving art therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric counseling to help with medication management.

She was enrolled in school shortly after arriving and has been on the Honor Roll since then. She recently got a job at a local restaurant as a server and is eager to learn more, develop her skills and continue growing professionally. She has been rebuilding her relationship with her family and has a very supportive mother who has been engaged with her progress. She recently received her first home pass and spent a wonderful weekend with her family. She has great relationships with the other residents, does her chores, and has demonstrated an interest in completing the program successfully and returning home.

Kimmie is truly developing into a leader. The other residents recognize her as a role model, she has a positive influence on morale at Mary’s Mount and she is a great student. Residential Counselor Tamika Chambers describes her as a “typical teenager dealing with typical adolescent issues. She is independent, caring and helpful. Being in a homelike environment, close to her family while she is dealing with the consequences of her actions is one of the best ways for her to get back on the right track and reach her highest potential.”

This training will explore concepts from various family therapy perspectives and their usefulness in working with clients with attachment difficulties. Mr. O’Toole is a clinical consultant and adjunct professor in the Masters of Social Work program at Catholic University and George Mason University.

As a foundation for this training, the concept of attachment disorder will be presented along with the various ways our clients can deviate from a healthy attachment pattern and what this looks like in treatment. Emphasis will be placed on how an attachment difficulty presents in a relationship as well as strategies and techniques that practitioners can use to respond which promote healthy attachment behaviors with clients.

Many of the classic family therapy models – to include Bowenian Systems, Structural, and Strategic family therapies – were not developed with attachment disorder in mind per se and tend to focus on systems issues as opposed to individual attachment dynamics. However, concepts from these models can be very useful in understanding how attachment issues may impact a system. A particular Strategic / Structural approach will be explored to teach participants how to promote a more healthy relational experience for teens with attachment difficulties. Additionally, the idea of preserving and promoting a healthy emotional climate in a system will be emphasized in work with clients with attachment difficulties.

This training will be a combination of PowerPoint presentation, interactive discussion, and hands on activities designed to illustrate the concepts.
