Princess Party makes our girls feel like royalty

DSCN1366The annual Princess Party held on July 17, 2015 at Amherst House is Columbia, MD was a magical night for everyone. In addition to girls and young women in the care of Hearts & Homes for Youth, we invited some young women from Maryland Promise to join us for the party.

This party is one of our favorite events every year. The young ladies entered the event space, unsure of what would transpire. They were invited to pick out an outfit, get a facial, get their hair styled, get their nails painted,  and have their makeup done. Then, the glamorous princesses entered the party with DJ Clinton playing some great music. The beautiful Miss Rhode Island called the girls over to join her and taught them how to walk down the runway, showing them different gestures and expressions, and encouraging them to express themselves. It warms our hearts to see the change that takes place from when the ladies first arrive, to their departure in their beautiful dresses and gowns, with bigger smiles and better posture. For this we are grateful to our volunteers and sponsors.

A number of volunteers including Miss Rhode Island United States Markita Bryant, Marines from Fort Meade, community members, a QED Group LLC volunteer, Mary Kay representatives, and other stylists helped us make the night very special for our young ladies. We are also grateful to  Costco in Wheaton, which  donated a sandwich platter for the girls and to Costo in Columbia, which also provided a sandwich platter. Our friends at Squisito’s in Burtonsville provided us with an exceptionally generous amount of delicious pizza! Harris Teeter in Kings Contrivance also gave us some gift certificates and prepared a beautiful princess cake for the party. We are also grateful to a special donor who gave us a $50 American Express gift card! The Corner Stable near Amherst House donated some tasty side dishes, which were quickly finished off.

Events and opportunities that provide young people with a new experience and help them realize their self worth and confidence could not happen often enough. There are many things we enjoy so often that we forget the immeasurable value of the experiences for our maturation, personal development, self-esteem, and general outlook on life. Unique experiences make a unique difference and can have a lasting impact.

We are looking forward to hosting our first event of the same kind for our young men on Friday, August 21st at the Kings of Style Party! Contact Vicki Valle, vicki@heartsandhomes.org if you would like to get involved!

The Princess Party is tonight!

DressWe are looking forward to holding the Princess Party tonight and already have a lot of people to thank!

We are grateful to Costco in Wheaton which has donated a sandwich platter for the girls and to Costo in Columbia which is preparing another sandwich platter. We are grateful to our friends at Squisito’s in Burtonsville for once again providing us with delicious pizza! We are also grateful to Harris Teeter in Kings Contrivance for some gift certificates and a special donor who gave us a $50 American Express gift card! Also a big thank you to The Corner Stable near Amherst House, which will be donating some side dishes!

We will have a variety of volunteers at the event tonight, making sure our girls feel special and have a great time. We are grateful once again for Marines coming from Fort Meade and we will have more people to thank after tonight’s party!

It takes a village to fix up a home!

IMG_1495Fixing up one of our group homes this past week was a true community project because many people and groups were involved.

It all started at a Columbia BNI event where we met Robert Garretson from Simply the Best Painting Company. He embraced our mission and introduced us to his friend at Sherwin Williams who had all the paint donated from two Sherwin Williams locations in Howard County.

IMG_1496The week of the project, Hearts & Homes staff members from our central office went to the group home to repair small dents in the walls and do some prep for the next day’s work. Then, on Friday and Saturday, a group of Marines stationed at Fort Meade came and painted the home for us. The Marines, their families, and Hearts & Homes staff members provided a total of 230 hours of labor. To put that in perspective, if a business was doing the job, that would have cost $10,350 just in labor. Paint would have been around $1,000, depending on brand/quality. Including supplies, the total cost would have been right around $12,000.

IMG_1486We are also grateful to Chris at Squisito’s in Burtonsville for giving us a great discount on the fantastic pizza that our volunteers enjoyed for lunch!

We have a few more things to do at the group home and will have more people to thank. For now, we are glad to express our sincerest gratitude to Sherwin Williams and the Marines!

Thank you Howard County Chamber!

J18ZCO3IPA Hearts & Homes for Youth is grateful  to Kristi Simon from the Howard County Chamber of Commerce! Kristi shared our post on Facebook asking for suits to give to our boys at the Kings of Style party and received a great response! We picked up a bunch of suits from the Chamber office yesterday! Thank you Kristi Simon and Howard County Chamber!

If you are interested in donating a suit, please call 301-679-1397 to arrange a pick up or drop them off at our office at 3919 National Drive, Suite 400, Burtonsville, MD 20866.

This year is the first time we are holding a Kings of Style party! We are looking forward to make the confidence building event an annual occasion! The Kings of Style party will be held at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club on Friday, August 21st. If you would like to sponsor the event or get involved and volunteer, contact Vicki Valle at vicki@heartsandhomes.org

A big thank you to BB&T!

5Today we delivered thank you card posters to BB&T, made by the youth in our group homes to express their gratitude for the Bash!

Our young ladies at Helen Smith had fun being creative and making a pretty poster, and the young men from John C. Tracey (though you can not see it very well in the photograph) wrote heartfelt messages of thanks for the fun day. BB&T has made our kids feel special again, hanging the posters in their break room!

Hearts & Homes staff and youth are grateful to the BB&T staff who took time out of their day to spend with us at a park. We are still talking about how great the food was, how much the kids appreciated the gifts, and how much fun it was to play softball, throw a football, and play other sports with BB&T employees – bankers are a lot of fun to hang out with!

7The Summer Bash & BBQ is part of BB&T’s Lighthouse Project, which is impacting a lot of people and a lot of organizations that are doing great things in the community. We are grateful to be one of the beneficiaries of their generosity!

We need suits!

Friends and supporters, we are in need of gently used suits and other men’s formal attire for our young men to wear to the Kings of Style party! Please contact Vicki Valle at vicki@heartsandhomes.org if you have formal wear to donate to our youth and if you would like to volunteer at this great event!

It is an opportunity for the boys and young men of Hearts & Homes for Youth to pick an outfit, get dressed up, and become kings of their own style! We hope that the youth leave the party with a fresh sense of confidence and self worth, in addition to formal attire that they can wear to future events and job interviews!

The Kings of Style Party will take place on Friday, August 21st at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club. There are many ways you can get involved, from donating gently used suits, shoes, and accessories, to being the dinner sponsor, to volunteering at the event and meeting our boys!
