Need community service hours?

yogaAre you looking to complete community service hours? We have plenty of opportunities! Hearts & Homes works with individuals, groups, like-minded organizations, and businesses to help us provide our youth with unique experiences and interactions that support their growth and development.

The activities and outings we put on for our youth aim to get them engaged with each other and the community, inspire them, develop their skills, foster their development, teach appropriate behaviors and coping skills, and reduce problematic behaviors.

Mentoring is a special opportunity for volunteers to share their time and talent with our youth. Volunteers can do everything from illuminating career paths, to engaging a group in an athletic activity, to leading a group in an art project! Write to us at info@heartsandhomes.org and let us know how you would like to get engaged!

Volunteers also help us carry out the activities we regularly put on for the youth, including the Back to School Picnic, Kings of Style Party, and the Princess Party. The purpose of the events is to help the youth realize their worth, develop their confidence, and get prepared for school and work! If you would like to volunteer for one of our regular activities, please contact Vicki Valle at vicki@heartsandhomes.org

The Kings of Style Party is a confidence-building event! It is an opportunity for the boys and young men of Hearts & Homes for Youth to pick an outfit, get dressed up, and become kings of their own style! We hope that the youth leave the party with a fresh sense of confidence and self worth, in addition to formal attire that they can wear to future events and job interviews!

The Kings of Style Party will take place on Friday, August 21st at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club. There are many ways you can get involved, from donating gently used suits, shoes, and accessories, to being the dinner sponsor, to volunteering at the event and meeting our boys! Give some love, change a life

WNT32S7DE1Hearts and Homes for Youth provides what every child deserves – a home, a family, and the opportunity to realize their hopes and dreams.

The word childhood conjures up images of playing ball, climbing trees, school, homework, mealtimes, and coming home to a warm, secure and safe bed – routines most of us take for granted.

But, for far too many children, “childhood” is simply a time for survival.  Whether it’s due to abuse, neglect, addiction or death of a caregiver, many children are “on their own” and with lives that are difficult and bleak at best.  That’s where Hearts & Homes for Youth comes in. We treat every child AS IF THEY WERE OUR OWN.

Hearts & Homes for Youth takes children with mental, emotional, and deep trust issues due to trauma and lack of attachment, and couple them with nurturing and trained caregivers; a surrogate family who form lasting bonds with the children.  This occurs because we put the child’s interests above anything else.

Once the safe and secure bonds begin to form, these children flourish.   They grow and mature intellectually, emotionally, socially and morally.

The youth in our care are referred to us by the Department of Juvenile Services as an alternative to detention, or the Department of Social Services to remove them from an unsafe environment. Myiesha was a young woman who was removed from an unsafe environment. Myiesha came to Hearts & Homes having  just turned age 18. Her mother, addicted to drugs, gave her up to an uncle and various relatives. Myiesha endured years of abuse, neglect and was essentially discarded. Throughout her tumultuous upbringing Myiesha did not have positive role models, trusting relationships, unconditional love or structure and the boundaries a young girl needs to develop into a productive, independent young lady.

Pregnant when she came to Hearts & Homes and into the foster home of Ms. Poindexter,  Myeshia chose to keep her baby.  We realized that given the proper guidance Myeshia could and would bond with her foster parent as well as learn proper parenting skills and bond with her baby at the same time.

With time, Myeisha built a strong relationship with her foster mother, enrolled in college, held a job, and made a good life for herself and her son.

Since 1964 Hearts & Homes for Youth has provided homes and families for more than 40,000 children and teen mothers with their babies in group homes, emergency shelter care, therapeutic group homes, foster care, independent living, and a homeless shelter. Each night, up to 176 children are at “home” in a safe, secure and loving place where the are cared for as if they were our own.

You know these children. Just look into the faces, the eyes, the smiles of your own or the kids next door. You will see and know the children and youth of Hearts & Homes.

Please join us and the thousands of others in the community who have literally saved the young lives of so many over the years and the many more yet to come and for whom you will come to care as if they were your own.  We will provide the home and the family. Help us to provide the heart. Click here to see how you can get involved!

We need clothing racks! – Thank you TJ Maxx in Olney!

IMG_1064We shared our need for clothing racks only moments ago…

We said, “this picture speaks for itself and we need your help…”

TJ Maxx in Olney responded!

We are so grateful to TJ Maxx in Olney for lending us four racks to use this summer! We are so glad to have these racks to hang the beautiful dresses and suits that have been donated by the community so our youth can get dressed up for the Princess Party and Kings of Style Party this summer!

This is all thanks to our own Claudia Mercado who reached out to her friend, TJ Maxx Manager Will Ball! Thank you Claudia for requesting the racks, thank you Gary Jones for helping transport the racks to the main office, and thank you TJ Maxx in Olney!

We need your help this Mother’s Day!

Damamli MomWe need your support for a special Mother’s Day celebration we are putting on for the young mothers in our care at our office in Baltimore! Currently we have 20 young mothers in our semi-independent living program, transitional group home, and foster homes. We want to provide them with a nice dinner and some spa-themed goodie bags.

The young women in our care have faced many challenges in their lives and many of them grew up in foster care. They are learning how to parent their kids without repeating the trauma and abuse they suffered, to be better parents and create better tomorrows for their children.

We would be grateful for your support! We need your help filling swag bags for our young mothers with:

  • Lotion
  • Nail polish
  • Body wash
  • Hair/nail gift certificates to salons in the Baltimore-area
  • Other pampering items

Please contact Caitlin Buckley at cbuckley@heartsandhomes.org if you can contribute to the swag bags and support our young mothers on this special day. We greatly appreciate your help to make a brighter future for these young mothers and their babies!

Get Involved!

Are you interested in getting involved with Hearts & Homes? We have plenty of opportunities for you to get engaged! As we help the youth prepare for summer when many of them will be looking for jobs, we are especially in need to volunteers to provide the following workshops:

  • Financial literacy
  • Resume writing
  • Mock interviews
  • Professional etiquette and hygiene

If you are interested in providing one of these workshops, mentoring our youth, or participating in the Princess Party or Kings of Style Party this summer, contact Caitlin Buckley at cbuckley@heartsandhomes.org – we look forward to hearing from you!

Princess Party

PP-230x300Join us on July 17, 2015 for our annual Princess Party! The event is an opportunity for the girls and young women of Hearts & Homes for Youth to pick an outfit, get dressed up, and feel like princesses!

Hasn’t every female, at one time or another, dreamed of being “Princess for a Day”? The young ladies of HHY have that experience thanks to Susan Davis, wife of devoted HHY Board Member Larry Davis!

“I was just purging, going through my closet, and I found I had dresses,” Davis recalls. “A lot of them had tags on them, and I thought, I can do something with these dresses.”

All of that turned into Princess Party – and an entire office floor transformed into a shopping mall, with not only gowns and shoes and jewelry, but also volunteers to do hair, makeup, and even teach the girls “the walk.” Click here to read more!

At the Princess Party, our young women pick a dress or two, matching shoes and jewelry. Their makeup, hair, and nails are done by local business professionals who volunteer their time. The young women enjoy a delicious assortment of food and attention from all the guests, staff, and volunteers at the Princess Party!

At this event, Hearts and Homes is filled with giggles, happiness, and young women who felt beautiful, confident, and immeasurable self-worth.

The care and attention the volunteers afforded to our young women is priceless! If you would like to get involved, contact Vicki Valle at vicki@heartsandhomes.org
