BB&T Hunt Valley hosts picnic for foster youth and families

IMG_0082BB&T Hunt Valley partnered with Hearts & Homes for Youth’s Damamli/Therapeutic Foster Care Program to host a picnic at Gwynn Oak Park for the foster youth and their families.

Volunteers from BB&T Hunt Valley branch reserved the park, decorated the pavilion, and cooked a fantastic BBQ lunch! They played games with youth on the field. The atmosphere was fun and lively! The kids, young mothers, foster parents, and staff had a great time.

“We are so grateful to BB&T Hunt Valley branch for choosing Hearts & Homes for Youth for their Lighthouse Project,” said Jessica McKinnie, Foster Care Program Administrator. “We can’t thank BB&T Hunt Valley enough for putting on this special opportunity for the youth to create great, new memories.”

History of Gwynn Oak Park

Gwynn Oak Park was once a popular amusement park in western Baltimore County until it closed in 1972 after extensive damaged caused by Hurricane Agnes. Gwynn Oak Park is a special landmark of the civil rights movement. On July 4, 1963, a number of people held a protest demanding desegregation of the park. The protest was successful and on August 28, 1963 the park officially desegregated.

BB&T Hunt Valley paints an impact at Hearts & Homes for Youth!

group 2Volunteers from BB&T Hunt Valley Branch teamed up with Hearts and Homes for Youth earlier this month to paint housing units for young mothers (age 14-20) in the Damamli Mother-Baby Independent Living program. Associates from BB&T Maryland Commercial Real Estate and Appraisal divisions volunteered on June 3rd to help prep new housing units for move in.

BB&T will be joining Hearts & Homes for Youth again on June 24th to throw an end of school year picnic for the youth in the Therapeutic Foster Care program to kick off the summer and celebrate the accomplishments of the school year for those in the program. The picnic will include food, crafts and games all sponsored and administered by the volunteers from BB&T.

“We are grateful to BB&T for repainting our young mother units,” said Hearts & Homes CEO and President Chloe Perez. “We were elated when they reached out to us! BB&T embraced the idea of doing something special for the young mothers and foster youth in our care. The results so far have been incredible and we can’t wait for the picnic later this month!”

Hearts and Homes for Youth and BB&T invite other members of the community to join them as they work to provide unique opportunities and experiences for the youth in the organization’s care, to help them build brighter futures. To volunteer or for more information, contact Jessica McKinnie, at jmckinnie@heartsandhomes.org.

“We wanted to work with Hearts and Homes for Youth because of the great work they do for foster youth and young mothers in Baltimore,” said Candace Zang, Commercial Credit Underwriter. “We’re proud to team up with them and help in any way we can.”

The BB&T volunteers are taking part in the company’s eighth annual Lighthouse Project. The teams have each selected a project to assist a nonprofit agency to complete between April and June to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need. BB&T hopes their efforts encourage others in the community to volunteer their time and support organizations such as Hearts and Homes for Youth.

Since the inception of the BB&T Lighthouse Project in 2009, BB&T associates have completed more than 7,700 community service projects, donated more than 385,000 hours in volunteer service and touched the lives of more than 11 million people. Associates overwhelmingly voted to bring back the initiative this year. For more information about the Lighthouse Project, go to www.bbt.com/bbt/lighthouseproject/.

BB&T throws a super summer bash!

11200886_10153452617732112_1754368695187908046_nThank you BB&T for the awesome summer Bash & BBQ! Hearts & Homes youth and staff had a great time! We are grateful for the goodies, clothes, games, and sports equipment you got for the children and teens and the programs! Our young mothers were especially grateful for the boxes of diapers and other baby items!

The food was great and each young person really enjoyed themselves. Some of our youth played horseshoe; two of our foster youth had never heard of the game until that day, and were still talking about it during the ride home!  Another one of our TFC youth was able to bring his sister who is not in our program – it made him feel good to be able to invite her and create memories for the both of them.

Many of the teen mothers from Damamli ILP were unable to attend the picnic due to their work schedules, however at their weekly group they received the gift donations. They excitedly tore through the box as they each selected items of their choice. They shared that the gifts were not only things that they liked but actually really needed.  They were very grateful and all left as happy campers!

We are grateful for the support, encouragement, and accessibility BB&T consistently provides to our team, and they reflected the same passion, enthusiasm, and kindness with our youth. Thank you for the the fantastic food, the fun activities, and the BB&T staff members who made the BBQ a great celebration!

BB&T puts on a Summer Bash and BBQ for Hearts & Homes Youth!

938ED3EE9EThis summer BB&T will put on a summer bash and BBQ for the 175 youth in the care of Hearts & Homes for Youth to celebrate the kids making it through the school year in an effort to turn around their lives!

BB&T has rented out a public park to put on this Bash and has utilized local vendors to help make the event memorable. BB&T associates will serve lunch, play games and socialize with the kids. In addition to the BBQ and Bash, BB&T will purchase and stock general supplies for the shelters that house 175 kids each night and provide each kid with a gift bag of clothes and books. This partnership is part of BB&T’s company-wide community service initiative called the “BB&T Lighthouse Project”.  Since 2009, BB&T associates have completed more than 6,600 community service projects, provided more than 325,000 volunteer hours, and helped change the lives of more than 9.7 million people through the Lighthouse effort.

“I have 6 and 1 year old sons and I only want the best for them. As Chairman of the board of HHY, I see so many good kids come to the shelters that had a rough start to their lives and just need a lot of love, support and a second chance at life. So I wanted to do something directly for the kids to show them that they deserve the best and that there are concerned people that are there to support them,” said Thomas Ransom, BB&T’s Market President.  “This is our third community service project this year in Montgomery County. We are committed to BB&T’s mission of making our community a better place to live.”

“BB&T and Thomas Ransom have been an amazing partner with HHY and other local charities. Over the years, BB&T has performed “Extreme Makeovers” and other significant projects for our shelters. BB&T is also a major sponsor of our Honors gala which is on October 8th at the Fillmore in Silver Spring.  At HHY, our mission is simply to treat each child as if they were our own and BB&T gets that. Thomas and his team are a shining example of Corporate Social Responsibility,” said Chloe Perez, HHY CEO.
